Our History
Learn how AJW grew into a trusted NDIS provider supporting our Cairns community.
Action Justice Wellbeing Pty Ltd (AJW) was founded in 2022 by Alexis, whose vision was to create a service grounded in social justice, human rights, and the belief that every individual deserves to be respected, heard, and supported to live a meaningful life. As a registered charity and a registered provider under the National Disability Insurance Scheme, AJW was established in response to the growing need for holistic, person-centred supports within the Cairns community. From the beginning, the organisation has been driven by progressive ideas, bold action, and a commitment to creating real outcomes where actions speak louder than words. Alexis and her dedicated team recognised that the complex challenges faced by people with disability require innovative thinking, diverse perspectives, and a strong foundation of practical and emotional support.
AJW’s model is built on the understanding that safe and stable housing is the first and most essential step toward improved wellbeing, an approach inspired by Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. With this philosophy at its core, AJW developed a holistic support framework that combines accommodation, daily living assistance, skill development, and meaningful community participation. The organisation provides a lifestyle-focused environment where residents live in their own independent spaces while sharing welcoming communal areas that foster connection, choice, and personal growth. Features such as community gardens, accessible recreation areas, a pool, and the presence of animals create opportunities for residents to build skills, develop responsibility, and experience the therapeutic benefits of a home-like environment, all under the guidance of qualified support staff.
As AJW has grown, so too has the range of supports available to participants. The organisation now delivers services across a wide spectrum of NDIS categories, including assistance with daily life, transport, consumables, social and community participation, assistive technology, home modifications, support coordination, improved living arrangements, employment pathways, and capacity-building programs. Through these supports, residents are empowered to develop essential life skills such as budgeting, cooking, maintaining a household, building relationships, completing written communication, and making informed decisions about their future. With 24/7 staffing in supported homes and access to accessible transport, AJW ensures that no participant misses out on opportunities to engage in the community and achieve their goals.
A key part of AJW’s journey has been its commitment to reducing the long-term pressure on public systems by providing early, consistent, and meaningful supports. By assisting people with disability to secure appropriate housing, improve their health and wellbeing, and strengthen their social and independent living skills, AJW contributes to better outcomes not only for individuals but also for the wider community. People with disability are often over-represented in the public health, housing, and justice systems, and AJW’s proactive, person-centred approach plays an important role in changing this narrative through prevention, empowerment, and inclusion.
What makes AJW unique is its family-home model of care, where small community living encourages the development of social skills, independence, and a genuine sense of belonging. Residents are supported to take pride in their home environment by participating in everyday activities such as gardening, caring for animals, and maintaining shared spaces, always with choice and flexibility at the forefront. Every aspect of the service is guided by the principles of autonomy, dignity, and human rights, ensuring that each person has control over how they live, learn, and engage with others.
Today, AJW continues to grow as a trusted and values-driven NDIS provider. The organisation remains committed to innovation, quality, and community connection while staying true to its founding purpose — to deliver holistic supports that improve all areas of life and create lasting, positive change for the people it serves. Through strong leadership, a passionate team, and a clear vision for the future, AJW is proud to walk alongside participants on their journey toward independence, wellbeing, and full participation in the community.
